Frequently Asked Questions

What are some characteristics of natural stone?

Slab stone is a natural product of nature and may vary in coloration, shading, and marking. Uniqueness is an inherent characteristic in natural stone. No two pieces are exactly alike.

Can Marble be used in the kitchen?

Marble is a beautiful stone but most marbles are not recommended for use in the kitchen because of its porous characteristic and its tendency to stain, etch, and scratch. However because of its beauty and the classic look, marble is an excellent choice for areas with less traffic like vanities, wet bars, and fireplace surrounds.

Can I lay out my slabs?

Absolutely! We recommend that you do so, especially if you have chosen an exotic stone. You can choose where you would like your tops to be cut from out of the slab.

Will granite scratch ?

No, granite is a very tough and durable material. Due to the granite's hardness, the only materials that will scratch granite are other granites, or diamonds. You can cut on granite, but it will eventually dull your knives.

Can I set hot pots on granite?

Yes, granite will tolerate temperatures in excess of 1200°F. It is safe to set hot pots or pans directly from the stove or oven onto the granite. WARNING: Due to the extreme temperature differences, hot glass dishes may crack when placed on the cool surface of the granite; this is known as thermal shock. For this reason alone glass or Pyrex® dishes should be placed on a trivet or hot pad.

Does granite stain?

Granite has very little porosity relative to other stones. Sealed granite will resist most common stains.

How often should granite be sealed?

Granite will be sealed before installation, and that should last from 3 to 5 years. One method you can use to test if your granite needs to be resealed is to sprinkle some water on your countertops. If the water beads up, the granite is sealed. If the water penetrates the stone, it is time to reseal it. We carry the Sealer and it is an easy process that you can do yourself.

What should I clean my granite with ?

For everyday cleaning mild dish soap and water should be sufficient. We recommend the Revitalizer, which is a cleaner and protector that can be used on a daily basis. The Revitalizer contains built-in sealer that reinforces protection for easy cleaning, and will also prolong the life of your sealer.

Are granite countertops expensive?

Improved stone-working technology has made granite countertops very affordable compared with manmade hard surface materials. With granite, the resale value of your property will also increase.
